Amazon’s $4B AWS expansion in Chile powers cloud growth, clean energy, and Latin America’s digital leap
12 Nov 2025

Amazon is placing one of its largest technology bets in South America, committing more than $4 billion to expand its cloud computing infrastructure in Chile. The new Amazon Web Services (AWS) region, expected to open by late 2026, will include three Availability Zones, each comprising multiple data centers. The investment extends Amazon’s Latin American presence beyond its existing hubs in Brazil and Mexico.
The Chilean region will give businesses across sectors, from energy to finance, faster access to cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. For Chile, the development marks a significant milestone: it brings digital infrastructure within national borders, reducing dependence on foreign servers and strengthening data sovereignty. “By bringing infrastructure closer to users, we’re enabling faster innovation and stronger data sovereignty,” an AWS spokesperson said.
Analysts view the project as a potential catalyst for Latin America’s growing digital economy. As countries pursue energy transitions, AWS technology could help utilities process the vast streams of data generated by renewable assets, smart grids, and sensors. Real-time analytics will be crucial for balancing electricity demand, integrating intermittent power sources, and maintaining grid stability.
Amazon’s choice of Chile reflects both strategic and environmental priorities. The country’s political stability, regulatory consistency, and renewable energy capacity align with the company’s sustainability commitments. The data centers will employ advanced cooling systems designed to minimize water use, an increasingly important consideration amid regional climate pressures.
Still, the expansion poses new challenges. The environmental footprint of large-scale data infrastructure, cybersecurity risks, and the need for skilled local labor remain pressing issues.
Even so, observers say the move underscores growing confidence in Chile’s digital future. By anchoring global cloud infrastructure in South America, Amazon is not only expanding its own reach but also helping to define the region’s next chapter in digital transformation, one rooted in connectivity, sustainability, and innovation.
